Fashion Show Makeup Masterclass with Sharleen Collins

Have you ever wanted to know what goes on behind the scenes at London Fashion week?

For our third masterclass with Sharleen Collins MUA, we focussed on fashion show makeup and the overall atmosphere and requirements that are involved at London fashion week.

Here’s a brief summary of what’s involved. The head makeup artist creates a look for the show and each MUA must follow that looks to the exact specifications. When the models are all ready for runway, they are then lined up and a each MUA is given a task of topping up either lips, cheeks, mascara, highlighter what ever it may be. Then the head makeup artist will look over each model to approve the look and send them out to runway! It’s often happened where the head MUA is not satisfied with the look and the makeup must be reapplied! It’s tough and each MUA is under a lot of pressure.

Sharleen gave us four different themes and a time limit to create each look. She also recreated the scene for us, to give us a real feel for the fashion show atmosphere. In the photo’s you’ll see a few of the students doing the top up in the model lineup.

If you want to work with makeup in the fashion industry including runway and editorial  you must;

  • Be able to create creative looks.
  • Understand concepts, era inspired looks, trends and what’s in season and in demand.
  • Be able to follow instructions and recreate looks that have been set out for you.
  • Have a knowledge of how light affects makeup, what products best suit the conditions.

There’s so many different avenues you can take becoming a makeup artist. For instance there’s counter work in the likes of  M.A.C, Benefit, Bobbi Brown, freelance MUA, theatre, bridal the list goes on. I love that this course is giving us a taste of some of the different options we have.

I’ve only one more day left with Sharleen and I’m excited to see what she has in store for us. I’ll keep you all posted XX
